About Location
Mairung – A New Paradise for Replenishing your Soul
Mairung, a new holiday destination for a break: Travelling is the best way of rejuvenating one’s mind and soul. And a trip to a place where nature is bounty, is a much needed break from a tight and tiring schedule of late night work, stress and breathing in the polluted air of cities. While the foothills of the Himalayas are the most popular hill stations, there is a small hamlet of paradise, located in the Kalimpong district in the state of West Bengal. Endowed with beautiful and varied flora and fauna, this place is called Mairung. For the traveler who wants to leap back into nature’s lap, Mairung has it all. An air of tranquility prevails in this town with a beautiful valley. Mairung has its importance too. This small area in North Bengal offers an excellent view of the Valleys. Spending one’s holiday here will not just wipe off stress and anxiety from one’s mind but will also reshape it.
Getting lost amidst nature: The place is not facilitated with every modern amenity. However, if you are looking forward to an escape from the dusty city life, spending a quality time without Facebook notifications or weekend treat at Domino’s, this is worth trying for your weekend holiday. Mairung is another word of peace. Peace of mind. You can let go off time and everything and be one with nature, watching clouds forming shapes in the blue sky, listening to hymns and praying in the little church in the village, watch the shape of current in the valley and soak in a lot of oxygen. There are places to visit such as Rikisum and Duka Falls and more. There are two things to be careful with – one the chilled weather, for which suitable woolen clothing should be packed along with clothes. Secondly, it is best to avoid venturing out after dark, as the village gets really quiet and hardly anyone can be spotted.
Mairung never ceases to surprise you with what it offers: There is a village close to this place, named Tendrebong, beautifully made simple yet cozy bamboo cottages can be seen here. You can also visit the Traditional Lepcha House which was built in 1852. The place with its adjoining areas is filled with lush green forests, flowers, orchids with the chirping of different birds. Various medicinal plants and herbs along with other vegetables and fruits available here. It can be said that nature has been very kind to the people of Mairung. For the curious minds, this place amicably allows tourists to visit areas where squash and cardamom are cultivated. Mairung has a variety of cultures like the Bhutia, Tamang, Rai, Lepcha and Christian community. All these ethnic cultures reside together under the cloak of clouds, amidst this beautiful town. Visitors can mix with these amiable and hospitable people and learn of their culture and also bag a few tasty recipes to surprise your friends.
For those who love trekking, there is a trekking route of one hour to Rikisum from where one can watch the breathtaking 360 degree view of the Kanchenjungha even you can camp here overnight.
Homestay facilities: For a traveler, a comfortable stay is essential. At Travnia, we offer you an excellent homestay option that is at a strategic place from where you can watch the beautiful night sky view of Pakyong, Renock, Mankhim, Gangtok, Pedong, Aritar, Zuluk and Padamchen. Along with a safe and comfortable stay, you can also enjoy the delicious traditional and organic food that is absolutely home cooked.
